Bonfils Stanton Library Circulation Policies

Purpose of the CHU May Bonfils Stanton Library
Circulation Policies
The circulation policies of the Colorado Heights University May Bonfils
Stanton Library exist to facilitate student, researcher, and instructor
access to the materials and information in the library's collections,
while protecting these same collections. There are three types of policies
set here: specific defaults, policies by patron type, and policies for
loan length and fine amount by a variety of fields used in the CHU Library
Automation System called LIBRARYWORLD. This policy will reflect
all of these areas.

GENERAL CIRCULATION POLICIES
I. In order to check out materials from the library, the first step
is to submit a full Patron Registration Form and get a library barcode
for your up-to-date CHU Picture ID for your Instructor, Staff, or Student ID Card, essentially turning
it in to your new library card! Library Staff will help patrons to choose
the proper registration forms.
- Students (Colorado Heights University, Augustine
Institute, Americorps) as well as CHU Staff may borrow up
to 10 items (including all items in all formats, noting that AV/Media
is limited to 3 items per patron at a time with a 7 day limit), at a time for a period
of 21 days.
- CHU Instructors may borrow up to
20 items (including all items in all formats, noting that AV/Media
is limited to 3 items per patron at a time with a 7 day limit), for
a period of 60 days with one renewal as long as no one else has requested
the item.
- Textbooks: Instructors may
checkout textbooks (books intended for class use) for the same 60
day period, with unlimited renewal(s), unless otherwise requested
by another instructor. This includes review materials, as well as desk and exam copies. Students should look for these materials
on the Reserve or Textbook shelves or by contacting their instructors.
- Reserve Books: Instructors may
place materials on the Reserve or Textbook shelf at the Circulation Desk when
they intend for students to use them during class or library homework
time. The "Reserve Materials Request Form" is located the
Circulation Desk and Library Staff will provide this. Textbooks for
regular check out may also be placed on the "textbook" shelf
as requested by instructors.
- Ready Reference Shelf: Instructors
and students can check materials out from this shelf during class
time or study time in the library by giving their CHU Picture ID card to Library Staff. Instructors and students should
be advised that the Reference shelves do have some materials which
as they go back further than just the most recent couple of years
may already contain incorrect data and/or inaccurate reference information,
and because of this, CHU Library patrons should be encouraged to use
of our online and subscription database access through EBSCOhost
in cases where accurate and current information is a priority.
- Using Library Reference & Reserve Materials:
Reference materials are marked with red "REF" stickers.
Also Reserve Books, Newspapers, Journals, and Magazines are
considered to be reference materials and are for use in the library
only. If an item is on the Reserve or Reference shelves
students and/or instructors can use them by visiting the Circulation
Desk and giving an ID card it to Library Staff to “check out”
even though these items actually remain in the library.
Bring Your ID: Library Staff will hold student, staff,
or teacher ID cards at the Circulation Desk for up to two hours for
newspapers, magazines, reference, or reserve materials.
Reserve/Reference Time Limits: In general, the reserve
and reference item checkout period is two hours, but for classes this
can be extended to the time needed for class use. When students are
working outside of class time on their own, the period is limited
to two hours for these items. If no one else requests the item(s)
the time period may be renewed twice for a total of up to six hours.
- AV/Mixed Format Materials such
as CD, DVD, VHS, AV Recordings, and so forth, may be checked out for
a 3 day loan period. There is a limit of two such items per patron.
- Hold Shelf
Items can be placed on the hold shelf when a patron forgets
their ID, or in the event of system issues.
- Overdue Items
When items are returned passed the due date a .25 cents per day, per
item late fee is assessed to all library patrons including staff,
teachers, and students. When items are lost or not returned at all
the fee will be the cost of replacing the item. If there any overdue items on an account, the patron cannot check out any other library items until their account is cleared again at the Business Office and the receipt for payment of any and all fines incurred is brought to Library Staff.
- Notice for All Library Users: Please
be sure to visit the Circulation Desk whenever taking any items from
the library shelves and before moving them to another location, even
just a library table or classroom so they don't get lost, and so they
can be properly tracked and re-shelved by Library Staff trained in
the Library of Congress Shelving
System. Please follow these policies properly and
help to preserve, protect, and maintain the collection for the entire
campus-wide community to share! If you have questions ask the Librarian
or Library Staff Members for assistance.
